Radiological Engineer

Job Title: Design Engineer – Job Reference Number 5139 Position Role: The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a Design Engineer for the Irradiation Testing Department. This position provides engineering design for Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) experiment development. Engineer is a contributing and skilled professional, able to apply principles, theories, and concepts toward research reactor experiment design. Contributes to solutions to moderately complex problems; independently completes engineering assignments. Defines parts of the experiment technical approach. Engineer understands applications of mechanical, nuclear, electrical, and material disciplines required to integrate into ATR experiment designs. Provides review and checks of calculations of work contributing to experiment and designs prepared by peers. Participates on project teams with staff from several organizations, and develops technical skills. Participates in professional activities. Develops new capabilities within the Fuels and Materials division. Responsibilities Include: - Support lead engineers in the preparation of Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) experiments. Develop technical and functional requirements for experiments, with test sponsors and other INL engineering staff. Design experiments, work with analysis staff to develop safety analyses to support experiment safety documentation. Work with ATR engineering and operations staff to install experiments into the ATR. - Interface with experiment program sponsors, operations, and engineering organizations to ensure programs, operations, modifications, and maintenance are performed consistent with facility authorization basis. - Maintain proficiency in engineering, design, and materials. Participate in professional development activities aimed at keeping pace with industry developments and increasing proficiency of applications to ATR experiments. - Support department strategic objectives, and the laboratory nuclear leadership mission through preparation and presentation of papers and journal articles. Qualifications Scientist/Engineer Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (nuclear or mechanical engineering preferred) plus a minimum of four years of relevant experience, or an applicable Master’s degree plus two years of relevant experience, or an applicable Doctorate. Scientist/Engineer Level 3: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (nuclear or mechanical engineering preferred) plus a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, or an applicable Master’s degree plus five years of relevant experience, or an applicable Doctorate plus three years of relevant experience. **Salary level, INL Job Classification, and specific job assignments will depend on required qualifications and capability of performer. **Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE level "L" clearance. **US citizenship Special Requirements: Mechanical component design and analysis experience preferred. Excellent oral communication skills and a capability to clearly describe complex experiment designs and analyses, and develop persuasive arguments to defend analyses are required. This position requires knowledge of nuclear reactor systems, safety analyses, and in-reactor experiments. Experience with ATR experiment design and operation is an advantage.
