Lively, Google’s virtual world, has been a flopIT SOUNDED like a brilliant idea. Google, the internet giant, would bring 3-D virtual worlds to the masses by making them accessible through a web browser. Millions of people log into virtual worlds such as World of Warcraft and Second Life every day, but they require special software and their complexity can be daunting to newcomers. So Google’s launch of Lively, in July, seemed to have great potential. But in the weeks since it opened its virtual doors, Lively has remained surprisingly lifeless, hosting a dwindling number of users and prompting a string of negative reviews.Lively is a simple environment, amounting to little more than a series of 3-D chat rooms. To enter, you must first download and install a plug-in for your web-browser. You can then choose from a list of rooms, the most popular of which are (inevitably) themed around sex and dating. And although some popular rooms—“Love Sweet Love” and “Sexy Babes Club”—have had thousands of visitors, the number quickly drops into the double digits further down the list. Hardly anyone is using Lively. ...

Dealing with the downturn:

Raising prices in straitened times calls for careful planningA COUPLE of years ago General Motors (GM), America’s biggest carmaker, swore it would no longer offer “employee discounts” on its vehicles. These large price cuts shrank bloated inventories, but they left buyers thinking that GM’s cars were worth far less than their list prices. Scrapping the discounts was part of ailing GM’s efforts to cure itself. But on August 19th the company reversed gear and reintroduced them, for a limited period, on nearly all its 2008 models and some 2009 ones.Although the move smacks of desperation, GM is not the only firm hoping that discounting can help it weather a sluggish global economy. On August 20th eBay, an online-auction site, said it would reduce the fees it charges sellers who post goods for sale on its site at a fixed price. The temptation in a downturn is to let prices slide to protect or increase market share. However, this approach can backfire if it triggers a price-cutting spiral. Moreover, managers often overestimate the extra sales that lower prices generate, so companies may be left worse off than before the cuts. That may help explain why a number of firms have been raising their prices, not cutting them—a trend that has contributed to a resurgence of inflation. ...

Despite hard times for the makers of big cars, JLR is happy under its new ownerWHEN Ratan Tata claimed ownership of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from Ford in early June, one of the first visits he made was to the Jaguar heritage museum at the British firm’s old site near Birmingham. The 71-year-old Mr Tata recalled that his father had bought one of its first XK120 sports cars in the late 1940s. Not only was the museum able to dig out his father’s order from the archives, it also took the chairman of the Indian industrial conglomerate for a spin in a similar car. It was the kind of personal touch that both the tradition-steeped car firm, and its new owner, hope will characterise their relations. Those relations may undergo an early test. When Tata Motors bought JLR for about $2 billion, it looked like a good deal. Thanks to Ford’s transformation of Land Rover, JLR had made profits of $650m in 2007. With its well received new mid-sized saloon, the XF, even Jaguar, a perennial lossmaker under Ford, was close to turning the corner into profit. In the first quarter of this year JLR rang up profits of $421m. ...

Everyone knows industry needs oil. Now people are worrying about water, too“WATER is the oil of the 21st century,” declares Andrew Liveris, the chief executive of Dow, a chemical company. Like oil, water is a critical lubricant of the global economy. And as with oil, supplies of water—at least, the clean, easily accessible sort—are coming under enormous strain because of the growing global population and an emerging middle-class in Asia that hankers for the water-intensive life enjoyed by people in the West.Oil prices have fallen from their recent peaks, but concerns about the availability of freshwater show no sign of abating. Goldman Sachs, an investment bank, estimates that global water consumption is doubling every 20 years, which it calls an “unsustainable” rate of growth. Water, unlike oil, has no substitute. Climate change is altering the patterns of freshwater availability in complex ways that can lead to more frequent and severe droughts. ...

China finds a way to cut car imports without offending the WTOLESS than a month after losing its first legal dispute with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), China has introduced a new tax that will achieve much of what it originally wanted, only by another route. Moreover, it is a “green” tax. Who could object to that? For the past few years China has imposed a special 25% tariff on imported car parts, rather than the usual 10%, if the parts made up more than half of the value of a vehicle. (Imported new cars are also subject to a 25% tariff.) This was to encourage foreign carmakers to use more local suppliers and reduce imports. But America, the European Union and Canada argued that the tariff was against WTO rules. In July the WTO, based in Geneva, agreed. ...

The career of Subramanian Ramadorai of Tata Consultancy Services parallels the rise of India’s software industryWHEN Subramanian Ramadorai joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the Indian software company he now leads, in 1972, computers were bulky and temperamental contraptions, in need of assembly, installation and constant repair. He still winces at the memory of loose contacts on a computer’s backplane and components that died as they were being tested or “burnt in” (a phenomenon known as “infant mortality”). Mr Ramadorai, who learnt mathematics at his father’s knee and earned degrees in physics, electronics and computer science, was not above picking up a screwdriver or pliers. At TCS, a colleague recalls, “You had to work with your own hands.” You had to bash metal before you could crunch code.Mr Ramadorai’s career at TCS parallels the rise of the industry itself. The Tata group first ventured into computers in 1968, serving its own companies with second-hand IBMs and an early ICL machine. Forty years later, India’s first software company is also its biggest, earning revenues of $5.7 billion in the year to March. Today it is difficult to appreciate the audacity and improbability of its success. In the 1970s India had a shortage of foreign exchange and an abundance of labour. The government did not make it easy for companies to spend precious dollars importing computers, which many suspected would only displace jobs. Even calculating the tariff was a computational feat. On the new Burroughs computer that TCS bought in 1974, it paid a tariff of 101.25%, including import duty, auxiliary duty, countervailing duty and a levy to help pay for the war in Bangladesh. ...

But sales are booming at the new Lidl discount supermarket in south-west Paris. Previously, the German chain stuck to the suburbs, where poorer folk live, says Fatouh Mourad, the store’s manager. But rising food prices and widespread concern about “pouvoir d’achat”, or purchasing power, in France, has given Lidl the confidence to push inside the city’s limits. As economic prospects worsen across Europe, discounters such as Lidl—and Aldi, another German chain—are taking market share. They generally charge some 30-50% less for groceries than ordinary supermarkets. In France, according to TNS, a research firm, discounters increased their market share to 11.2% in the second quarter of this year, up from 10.5% a year ago, whereas the share fell at Carrefour, the world’s second-largest retailer. In Belgium a local discounter, Colruyt, is gaining share at the expense of Carrefour and other pricier chains. Dutch shoppers too are trading down to discounters, says TNS, and in Britain, where Aldi and Lidl struggled for years, they are now the fastest-growing grocers. ...

A newcomer is shaking up satellite television in AfricaWITH only 14% of families owning a television, sub-Saharan Africans are in little danger of turning into couch potatoes. But the region’s economy is doing better than it has in decades, and many countries have a small emerging middle-class eager to spend their new wealth. That, at least, is the calculation of GTV, a satellite-television company created just over a year ago. So far it has signed up more than 100,000 customers in 20 countries—which, it reckons, translates into 1.25m regular viewers. This week it launched its first francophone service, in Congo and Cameroon, to be followed shortly by Cote d’Ivoire. GTV expects to be operating in 36 African countries by the end of the year. This is shaking up the quasi-monopolies that Canal+, a French operator, and DStv, a subsidiary of Naspers, a South African media giant, have enjoyed for years. With few people able to afford a television, let alone a satellite subscription, pay TV remains limited to less than 1% of the African market. Is the crisis over?SEVEN of America’s biggest airlines chalked up combined losses of $5.9 billion in the second quarter of the year, but this week their share prices continued their month-long, gravity-defying rebound. Fuelling the new optimism was a report from Morgan Stanley, an investment bank, suggesting that much of the troubled industry could return to profit as early as 2009. Could the tempest of rising costs and sagging demand that so recently seemed to jeopardise many airlines’ survival already be blowing itself out?The cause of the change in sentiment is hardly a mystery. When crude-oil futures nearly touched $150 a barrel in mid-July, the airlines were braced for the gravest crisis in their history—something far worse and longer lasting than the aftermath of September 11th 2001. But since then oil futures have fallen steadily, hitting $112.31 on August 12th. The United States Airlines Index has become almost a mirror image of the price of jet fuel, climbing 13% this month while the price of fuel fell by 12%. ...

His ascent from lowly salaryman to lofty shacho (president) traces corporate Japan’s rise in the 1980s, its descent into the “lost decade” of the 1990s and its subsequent tentative recovery. News of Mr Shima’s appointment was broadcast on television and splashed across the country’s newspapers, and the bosses of Japan’s biggest firms lined up to lavish praise on him. “He is a man of principle,” said Tsunehisa Katsumata, president of Tokyo Electric Power. Part of Mr Shima’s appeal, in addition to his timelessly youthful looks, is his respect for the Japanese virtues of hard work, self-sacrifice, loyalty and modesty. “My position is a result of the support of the people around me,” he said when he was named to the post. Despite his modesty, Mr Shima has been the subject of two television series and a film. He endorses snacks and beer, so that pictures of him, perpetually raising a glass, are plastered across Japan. Ladies cannot help but throw themselves before him. He is rather like a Japanese James Bond who swapped 007 for an MBA. And Mr Shima resembles Mr Bond in another respect: he is a fictional character. ...

The American car market:

Will the Big Three’s cash last long enough for them to fix themselves?WITH each successive month the plight of Detroit’s Big Three manufacturers—General Motors (GM), Ford and Chrysler—becomes a little more desperate and their eventual fate less certain. July’s figures for light-vehicle sales in America, released last week, were unremittingly awful. Seasonally adjusted and annualised, sales fell to 12.5m from 15.3m last year. As in previous months, sales of pickups and sport-utility vehicles (SUVs), down by 31% year on year, were worst hit. But even car sales, hampered by supply shortages of the fuel-sipping compact models Americans now suddenly want, fell by 7.4%. Reduced access to credit also had an impact, as carmakers become increasingly reluctant to finance lease agreements. Typically, at the end of a three-year lease, a vehicle is returned to the manufacturer which then disposes of it, usually profitably, at auction. But the prices being paid for used trucks are down by about 20% compared with last year. Chrysler Financial is losing $5,000 on every truck it takes back. At the end of July Chrysler stunned its dealers by saying it was getting out of leasing entirely. Ford and GM have not yet gone as far, but they are scaling back leasing in an effort to reduce future liabilities. ...

Business in China:

How much will rising shipping costs hurt Chinese manufacturing?ON LAND, high oil prices have ended America’s love affair with sport-utility vehicles, forcing carmakers to revamp their product line-ups. In the air, sky-high fuel costs have prompted airlines to raise ticket prices and cut routes. What about at sea? Could rising shipping costs scupper China’s export boom? This question has been much discussed since Jeff Rubin and Benjamin Tal of CIBC, a Canadian bank, issued a memo a few weeks ago saying that a reversal of the great migration of manufacturing operations to China might already be under way. The cost of shipping a standard 40-foot container from Shanghai to America’s east coast, for example, has jumped from $3,000 in 2000 to about $8,000 today. The extra cost of transporting goods halfway around the world, Messrs Rubin and Tal wrote, is wiping out the often slim margins of Chinese exporters. What is more, if oil and shipping prices stay high, many Western companies that now outsource their manufacturing to China might decide that it makes more sense to shift production closer to their customers at home. ...

Silvio Berlusconi is struggling to put together an Italian solution for Alitalia“WE WILL perform another miracle and will offer Italy a profitable national airline.” That was the promise from Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s prime minister, this week as his government postponed the announcement of a long-awaited plan to rescue Alitalia, the country’s lossmaking flag-carrier. The “miracle” was to have been discussed at a board meeting on August 8th and revealed soon afterwards, but will now be a secret until September. The stated reason is to avoid disrupting the summer holidays with strikes and cancelled flights. But many people reckon the plan is being delayed because it is controversial and, in some ways, incomplete.Alitalia is in such dire straits that only a recent loan of €300m ($480m) from the government is keeping it flying. Air France-KLM made an offer for Alitalia in March, but withdrew its bid after failing to reach agreement with Alitalia’s unions—and after Mr Berlusconi said during his election campaign that selling Italy’s flag-carrier to a French rival would be unacceptable. ...

Tough times are producing some surprising business bedfellowsCOMPETITORS often find it hard to be civil to one another in public. But few rivalries have been as nasty as that between two New York newspapers, the New York Post and the Daily News. The “Daily Snooze”, as the Post dubs its rival, takes great pleasure in rubbishing its arch-enemy, and vice versa. Scurrilous gossip about the Post’s owner, Rupert Murdoch, is avidly reported by the Daily News; its proprietor, Mortimer Zuckerman, has been the target of less than flattering coverage in the Post. And the two titles like to bicker over which has the bigger circulation.Yet behind the scenes executives from both papers are talking about working together in some areas, such as distribution, in an effort to slash costs. Nor are they the only rivals thinking the previously unthinkable. With the global economy on the rocks, businesses everywhere are desperately searching for ways to save money or boost revenue—even if they require collaboration with the enemy. ...

Business-school applications pick up as the economy slowsANYONE wanting further proof that the world economy is in trouble need look no further than the nearest business school. Many schools are hailing a bumper year for their full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes, which are popular with executives looking to hone their moneymaking skills while sitting out a downturn. Worryingly for those betting on a swift economic recovery, business schools reckon that next year could yield an even bigger crop of applicants.During the previous downswing the percentage of full-time MBA programmes reporting higher applications soared as tech stars switched to textbooks (see chart). The pace slowed as the economy improved, but then picked up again. Preliminary figures from the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), an international organisation of business schools, show that 77% of full-time programmes have reported higher demand for places this year. ...
