NCW 2008 Focuses on Fun with Sports

From sandy baseball fields in Los Angeles to blacktop basketball courts in New York City, this year's National Chemistry Week (NCW) - October 19-25 - will draw upon young people's love for sports and show them how chemistry plays a big part in all kinds of games. The theme of NCW 2008 is "Having a Ball with Chemistry." More information about NCW, including contest rules and deadlines, is available on the NCW web site; the ACS Education Division also offers chemistry activities for kids online.
"Nanorose" Wins NanoVision Contest for September

P. Pitukmanorom, T.-H. Yong, and J. Y. Ying at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (Singapore) detail a design strategy that controls material properties and processing parameters to influence the protein release characteristics of inorganic-polymer nanocomposite microspheres. They controlled the dissolution of the inorganic framework using the acidic breakdown products of the hydrolyzed encapsulating polymers.
