Since fuel-injection was introduced in 1957 rather than the '80s, it's perhaps not surprising that Hyundai is not aware that GDI dates back to the previous millennium in midsize sedans (the 1996 Mitsubishi Galant/Aspire). In this millennium GDI has been used on 4-cylinder engines in the Ford Mondeo, Opel Vectra and Signum, Nissan Bluebird and Primera, Toyota Avensis, Premio and Allion, Mitsubishi Galant, Buick Regal, Opel Insignia, Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Magotan, Skoda Superb, BMW 520i, Mercedes E200 and E250 CGI, Alfa Romeo 156 and 159, Audi A4 and A6 and SEAT Exeo. I've probably left some out. Certainly by the time the GDI Sonata is available there will at least be the Buick LaCrosse with 2.4 GDI as well. With 6-cylinder GDI engines there have been and are even more midsize sedans.

Comment on 2009 Frankfurt Motor ShowAll-New Land Cruiser* by Andrew Charles

The new generation (J150) Land Cruiser Prado went on sale in Japan yesterday. Produced by Toyota's commercial truck subsidiary Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan, the new Prado is a major update of the old model, rather than being "All-New", standard practice for most late-generation SUVs. Rather than invest in a new frame and body Toyota and other manufacturers have focused on improving the existing structure—reducing body flex, improving stiffness and strength etc.. Wider wheel arches and new suspension allow a wider track to improve stability and handling without widening the frame and body, saving on both engineering and tooling costs. Powertrain updates are also minor—4-cylinder engines are carried over from the J120, a 2.7 L gasoline engine shared with the Tacoma and Hilux for the Japanese domestic market and a 3.0 L turbodiesel upgraded in 2006 for export markets; the 4.0 L V6 finally receives the Dual VVT system and roller rocker arms common to the smaller GR-series engines, together with a higher compression ratio (now 10.4:1 instead of 10:1) they boost power by 35 hp for the European market and reduce fuel consumption and pollution. The interior benefits most from this makeover, with new 5- and 7-seat layouts with added flexibility, more legroom and a power-folding third row in 7-seat models replacing the previous 5- and 8-seat versions.

Comment on SEAT Presents the New Sporty Limousine Exeo in Paris by Andrew Charles

The A4 this car is based on was indeed closer to the size of an Astra or Mégane sedan. As to the Mondeo, while early Mondeos were of comparable size, the new one is substantially larger—like most new midsize sedans it strays out of the D-segment, while the original Mondeo was not merely nominally in the C/D segment, it was by modern standards a true compact (even the contemporary Mazda 323 had more legroom). The Exeo may be longer than the A4 it's based on, but then so is the Brazilian version of the A3310 Astra sedan. As if to highlight how far things have changed, the Brazilian model is marketed as a Vectra, and why not? It's bigger than the Vectra it replaces in every dimension, and in most dimensions is bigger than the late European Vectra as well. Getting accurate dimensions for the older models you mention can be tricky, but even if they were midsize at the time, it's still possible the Exeo is the largest SEAT ever built, and is certainly the only one based a VWs B-segment platform. So what if they span a size range all the way from the C- to the top of the E-segment. As far as VW is concerned they're all the same size. The late Toledo may have been almost as big, but it was still based on the "A-segment" Golf, not the Passat.

And before that, Seat produced the Malaga, the 131,132, 1500. If Toledo/Malaga don't qualify (more like C segment), the 80s 132 and 70s 1500 sure do.
Comment on SAIC-GM-Wuling Signs Agreements to Export Mini-Commercial Vehicles to South America, Middle East and North Africa by Andrew Charles

The Wuling N200 is known in China as the HongTu, and the N300 as the Rongguang. They are equipped with GM Daewoo's new 16V DOHC B-series 4-cylinder engines, developed from the old Suzuki F-series block and now produced by SGMW to replace the older F-series engines produced by Wuling Motors. The N200 is offered with the 80 hp 1.15 L B11/LXA (a wider bore and shorter stroke than the F12 previously used in the Kalos), and the 84 hp 1.2 L B12/LAQ, while the larger N300 uses an 81 hp version of the B12 optimized for lower rpm operation.

They are among the few modern engines produced in China capable of meeting the Euro4 emission standard, and versions capable of meeting the tougher US and Euro5 standards will soon be produced in Korea. SOHC versions of the Suzuki F-series are produced by several manufacturers in China, and while most now meet the Euro3 standard required for the domestic market, only Wuling Motors offers a Euro4 version as it seeks to increase outside sales.

The N200 has few direct competitors outside China except the Indonesian Daihatsu Zebra (more familiar in Europe as the former HiJet), while the N300 most closely matches the Suzuki APV and Daihatsu Gran Max (Nissan's new NV200 is substantially bigger). While both Chevrolet and Ford offered compact vans in this size class in the '60s this segment has largely been abandoned in North America and Europe, and until recently even the Japanese market has been served only by the outdated Mazda Bongo (also sold by Nissan and Mitsubishi but now more than 20 years old). The success of European-style car-based LCVs has demonstrated the continued demand for small vans, and with the introduction of the Transit Connect in North America, other manufacturers can't afford to ignore this market for much longer.

Comment on The Audi A5 Sportback — The Best of Three Worlds by Andrew Charles

Audi may characterize the A5 Sportback as a 5-door coupé, and a new design idea, but in reality is not much more than a fastback version of the A4, and a design idea that has been seen for decades in models offered by most mid-market automakers including the current Ford Mondeo, Opel Insignia and Renault Laguna. Audi's innovation here consists of restyling the A5 (it remains the same size as the A4 inside and out, despite the lower roofline and wider track); offering cutting edge features (start-stop, regenerative braking, rear axle torque vectoring) in the A5 before they are introduced in the A4 (make no mistake, since BMW already offers similar features in the smaller 3-series they will be offered in the A4 soon enough); and pricing the A5 some 3–7,000 Euro above the comparable A4. Some of that higher price is undoubtedly due to the increased content and new body (even fastback versions of the Mondeo and Insignia carry a small premium over the notchback in the German market), but it places the A5 as far above the A4 as the A4 is above mainstream mid-size models such as the 407 and Passat.

Will the A5 be a success? Fastback sedans in the midsize "executive" segment have always been a tough sell in Europe. Earlier attempts such as Ford's Scorpio, the Rover 800 and the Saab 9000 were soon abandoned in favor of quick redesigns as more traditional notchbacks, and even fastback versions of cheaper executive class sedans such as the Mondeo and Vectra have made up only a minority of sales. In the minds of consumers, a premium sedan is a conservative choice. It may be less sporting, but it is seen as more solid, reliable and secure. This attitude may however be changing. Renault's Laguna has long been offered primarily as a fastback sedan or wagon, and has sold well. The new Insignia and Mondeo have proven popular with styling that blurs the line between standard sedan and fastback. In the premium segment the BMW 1-series and Audi A3 have led the way in making the hatchback acceptable, at least in smaller models. At the high end the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide have helped change expectations for the luxury class as well. The EX37/Skyline Crossover though not as sleek, is in reality a hatchback, as is the BMW X6; and BMW will soon offer its own large hatchback in the 5-series GT (in reality a hatchback version of the new 7-series).

Comment on Hyundai Introduces New R-Diesel Engine by Andrew Charles

The Hyundai R-type diesel family is a larger engine block (c 2.0–2.2 L engines) than those used in the Verna/Accent, and is not applicable to that model. It replaces the D4E series of engines developed from the R420 design licensed from VM Motori (now half-owned by GM). The Verna/Accent and the new i20 use the older Hyundai U-type diesel (D3F/D4F), which replaced the 3-cylinder D3E engine also licensed from VM. The CRDI technology is however completely independent of the engine family. The U-type has progressed from a low-pressure, high compression (17.8:1) system still used in the 1.5 L Verna/Accent, to a higher pressure, lower compression (17.3:1) in the newer 1.6 L engine, to an even higher pressure, lower-compression (17.0:1) system in the newest 1.4 L in the i20. The latest systems used by other manufacturers however have lowered the compression ratio much further, to well below 17:1 and even below 16:1. Hyundai still has a lot of catching up to do.
