In music, an arrangement loosely describes rewriting a piece of pre-existing music for a specific set of instruments or voices, often in harmony or with additional original material.
The American Federation of Musicians defines arranging as "the art of preparing and adapting an already written composition for presentation in other than its original form. An arrangement may include reharmonization, paraphrasing, and/or development of a composition, so that it fully represents the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic structure" (ibid).
A little animation I threw together taking a look at Sony's success with proprietary formats over the years. Yes, they have had some successes (the 3.5" floppy being a particularly notable example), but for the most part, their proprietary media does very poorly.
A big thanks to my friend, Dan Fissel, for letting me use his perfectly upbeat jingle.
