A newspaper is a publication containing news and information and advertising, usually printed on low-cost paper called newsprint. It may be general or special interest, most often published daily or weekly. The first printed newspaper was published in 1605, and the form has thrived even in the face of competition from technologies such as radio and television. Recent developments on the Internet are posing major threats to its business model, however. Paid circulation is declining in most countries, and advertising revenue, which makes up the bulk of a newspaper's income, is shifting from print to online; some commentators, nevertheless, point out that historically new media such as radio and television did not entirely supplant existing media.

Overview

General-interest newspapers are usually journals of current news. Those can include political events, crime, business, culture, sports, and opinions (either editorials, columns, or political cartoons). Many also include weather news and forecasts. Newspapers use photographs to illustrate stories; use editorial cartoonists, usually to illustrate writing that is opinion, rather than news; and also often include comic strips and other entertainment, such as crosswords and horoscopes.

A daily newspaper is issued every day, often with the exception of Sundays and some national holidays. Saturday, and where they exist Sunday, editions of daily newspapers tend to be larger, include more specialized sections, and cost more.

Review: 'Bangkok Dangerous'
Mon, 08 Sep 2008 00:00:00 -0700
The Pang brothers remake their audacious 1999 film, but without the gritty, seamy feel of the original, it seems like just another bullet ballet out of a Steve Wynn dream. For those unfamiliar with the Pang brothers' audacious 1999 " Bangkok Dangerous," the new version starring Nicolas Cage will seem like any other fast-food bullet ballet. Viewers who recall that original burst of adrenaline, however, will be left with hunger pangs.

Sarah Palin, if her life was a movie
Fri, 05 Sep 2008 00:00:00 -0700
How about 'Mrs. Palin Goes to Washington'? L IKE MANY around Hollywood, I've spent an embarrassing amount of time during the week trying to decide which actress would be best to play Sarah Palin in the story of her life. I know conventional wisdom says that Tina Fey is a lock for the part, but do you really think that the " 30 Rock" star could be believable in a role in which she'd have to wrestle a moose to the ground and vivisect ol' Bullwinkle with her bowie knife?
