Gelbvieh (Ger. "Yellow cow") is a breed of cattle originating in Bavaria around the end of the 18th century. The breed is known as the "German Yellow" and "Einfarbig gelbe Hohenvich." In spite of the name, the breed is a tawny red color. It was partly derived from the Brown Swiss and Bernese breeds of Swiss cattle. Selection was based on quality of meat, milk production, and strength of the draft animal.
This breed has been introduced to Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the United States, primarily by artificial insemination.
